And on extra hot summer days, you can even pop it in the freezer for a cool sensory surprise!

VOCABULARY

  • Summer: The warmest part of the year! Summer occurs between Spring and Autumn and is a great time to explore the outdoors.

  • Fruit: Something edible that grows from a flowering plant. Fruits are usually sweet, juicy, and hold seeds inside, like watermelon, kiwi, and strawberries!

  • Sensory Friendly: Activities or experiences designed to be calming and less overwhelming. Great for all kids, especially those who benefit from gentle sensory input.

  • Texture: The way something feels when you touch it (smooth, squishy, bumpy, or rough).

GUIDING QUESTIONS

  • What kind of fruit should we make today, and what color should it be?

  • What would happen if we put our squishy fruit bag in the freezer? Let’s find out!

  • How does the bag feel when you squish it? Can you describe the texture?

  • What do you notice happening to the food coloring as you mix it around?

MATERIALS

  • 1 plastic sandwich bag

  • Clear hair gel (about 1 cup)

  • Food coloring (choose your fruit’s color!)

  • 1 sheet of black foam (for seeds)

  • Scissors

  • Duct tape in any color (to seal the bag securely)

  • Spoon or squeeze tube to add the gel

  • Optional: glitter or fun foam shapes for extra sensory flair

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1

Using scissors, cut small seed shapes (circles or teardrop shapes) from your sheet of black foam. These will be the seeds inside your fruit! Place the foam seeds into your plastic bag. For a fun extra twist, you can also add a pinch of glitter or other small foam shapes to the bag.

STEP 2

Using your spoon or squeeze tube, add about 1 cup of clear hair gel into the plastic bag with the seeds.

STEP 3

Then add 1–2 drops of food coloring to your chosen fruit color. Seal the bag tightly shut, pressing all the air out first.

STEP 4

Now for the best part, squish! Use your fingers to push the food coloring and seeds around inside the bag, mixing the color through the gel. Watch the food coloring swirl and spread until your fruit sensory bag is one beautiful, even color. The seeds will float and move around just like real fruit seeds!
