Have you ever watched a butterfly float through a garden and wondered how those wings get so brilliantly colorful? Butterflies are one of nature’s most magical creatures, starting life as a tiny egg on a leaf, hatching into a hungry caterpillar, and then transforming into a stunning winged adult through an incredible process called metamorphosis. And those dazzling wing patterns? They’re not just beautiful; they soak up warmth from the sun and even warn predators to stay away!

In this coffee filter butterfly craft for kids, your child will create their own stunning butterfly using markers, water, and a pipe cleaner. Watch the colors bleed and blend into beautiful watercolor wings right before their eyes. This easy nature science craft is perfect for ages 4 and up and makes a wonderful at-home STEAM activity, summer project, or complement to a butterfly life cycle unit.

VOCABULARY

  • Antennae: The long, thin parts on top of the heads of butterflies. They use them to taste food and sense changes in the air around them. (We’ll make ours with a pipe cleaner!)

  • Proboscis: A long, straw-like tube that butterflies use to drink nectar from flowers. It coils up under their head when they’re not eating!

  • Chrysalis: The protective shell a butterfly caterpillar forms around itself while it transforms into an adult butterfly. It’s often bright green or gold.

GUIDING QUESTIONS

MATERIALS

  • 1 basket-style coffee filter

  • Washable markers in bright colors

  • A spray bottle filled with water (or a dropper)

  • 1 pipe cleaner (for the body and antennae)

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1

Color your coffee filter wings! Lay your coffee filter flat on a protected surface. Using washable markers, decorate your filter with butterfly-inspired colors and patterns. Cover as much of the filter as you like!

STEP 2

Once your filter is colorfully decorated, give it a few sprays of water from your spray bottle. Watch the marker colors bleed and blend together — this is what creates the beautiful watercolor effect on the wings! Then hang your filter on a drying line or lay it flat on a paper towel and let it dry completely before moving on.

Once your filter is fully dry, pinch it together in the center to gather the wings.

Take your pipe cleaner and wrap it around the pinched center, twisting firmly to hold the wings in place. Then bend the two ends of the pipe cleaner upward and curl the tips to make your butterfly’s antennae, just like a real butterfly’s!
