Rainbow Handprint Pride Craft for Kids

A Colorful Pride Month STREAM Activity for Ages 4 and Up

Happy Pride Month! Every June, we celebrate the culture, history, and incredible resilience of the LGBTQIA+ community, and what better way to join the celebration than with a rainbow handprint Pride craft for kids? This colorful, hands-on activity for ages 4 and up creates a beautiful paper surprise: two hands that open to reveal a rainbow of hearts in all the colors of the Pride flag.

Pride Month honors the accomplishments the LGBTQIA+ community has fought for, like the right to marry who they love, the right to have families, and the right to exist and be celebrated. This kids’ craft activity is a wonderful way to start conversations about equality, inclusion, and kindness in an age-appropriate, joyful way.

VOCABULARY

  • LGBTQIA+: This stands for some of the identities in this community! L = Lesbian, G = Gay, B = Bisexual, T = Transgender, Q = Queer, I = Intersex, A = Asexual, + = All of the other amazing identities that fall under the rainbow!

  • Equality: Every person has the same value, rights, and opportunities and deserves to be treated fairly, regardless of who they are.

  • Pride: A feeling of happiness and confidence in who you are. Pride Month is a time to celebrate and honor the LGBTQIA+ community.

  • Ally: Someone who supports and stands up for a community they may not personally belong to.

GUIDING QUESTIONS

  • How can we make people who are different from us feel included, celebrated, and loved?

  • Why is it important for everyone to feel like they belong?

  • What does the word ‘equality’ mean to you?

MATERIALS

  • 1 sheet of skin-tone construction paper

  • Rainbow construction paper: 1 sheet per color (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple)

  • Glue stick

  • Scissors

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1

Fold the skin tone color construction paper in half and trace your left hand with your pinky up against the fold.

STEP 2

Using your scissors, and while your paper is still folded, carefully cut out your hand shape.

*Be careful to NOT cut the fold of your paper! Your hands should still be together.

Cut out the traced handprint.

STEP 3

Then, unfold your hands and set them to the side. Now, similarly to the way we cut out the hands, take each sheet of your colored construction paper and fold it in half. Using your scissors, cut out half of a heart shape on the fold, making one heart per color (6 total!)

STEP 4

Taking your red heart and your glue stick, glue the right side of your red heart to the left side of your orange heart. Then continue this process with the rest (glue the right side of orange to the left side of yellow, etc). The colors in order are: Red-Orange-Yellow-Green-Blue-Purple.

STEP 5

Once all of your hearts are glued together, glue the left side of your red heart to the left hand. Then, glue the right side of your purple heart to the right hand. Now, close your paper hands and open them up to reveal all of the beautiful colors of the LGBTQIA+ community as we celebrate, uplift, and hold space for them!
