STREAM Activity: Kindness Wand

Spread Kindness Like Confetti!

Activity best for children ages four and up

Did you know that speaking kind words about ourselves and others can help us and others feel good? Being kind to ourselves and others is like magic! When we speak kindly to others, it can help them to feel confident and loved, and when we treat ourselves kindly with our words it can help us to feel brave and loved as well. Let’s work together to make a magic wand that will help us speak kindly to others and ourselves!

VOCABULARY

  • Kind: Being friendly, gentle, and helpful to others to make them feel happy!

  • Confident: Feeling good about who you are!

  • Brave: Knowing it’s okay to try new things or make mistakes!

GUIDING QUESTIONS

  • What are some kind words we say to each other every day?

  • How do you feel when others say kind words to you?

MATERIALS

  • Straw

  • Feathers

  • Tape

  • String or Ribbon

  • Stickers or Tape

  • Construction Paper

  • Pipe Cleaner

  • Pencil

  • Markers or Crayons (optional)

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1

First, take your straw and three feathers of your choice and stick the ends of the feathers into the bottom of your straw. Then, take your tape and secure your feathers in place. We recommend fun washi tape for some added color!

STEP 2

Then, using your scissors and construction paper, cut out fun shapes (e.g., a heart, star, diamond, etc.). After you cut out your shapes, try writing kind words on them with your markers or crayons to share the magic of kind words with others!

STEP 3

Once your shapes are cut out, cut three to four pieces of string to whichever length you like and place one end on the back of each shape. Secure the string to your cut-out shape using a sticker or tape.

STEP 4

Now, with the help of your grown-up, tie your strings onto your straw on the end that doesn’t have feathers.

STEP 5

Lastly, take your pipe cleaner and wrap it around your pencil. After you can’t wrap it anymore, slide your curly pipe cleaner off and place one end of it into the open end of your straw. Using your tape, secure it in place.
