Create Tidepool Magic with Paint and a Straw!

Activity best for children ages three and up

Summer may be wrapping up, but we’re still making a splash with ocean fun! Today’s craft is a colorful starfish blow painting project that’s sure to keep your creativity flowing. As you paint, think about how these amazing sea creatures live on the ocean floor and use their arms to move and explore.

VOCABULARY

  • Starfish: a sea animal shaped like a star that lives in the ocean

  • Ocean floor: the bottom of the ocean where plants and animals live

GUIDING QUESTIONS

  • What was your favorite thing you did this summer?

  • Have you ever seen a starfish before?

MATERIALS

  • Paper plates

  • Water -thinned tempera paint

  • Pipettes

  • Straws

  • Scissors

  • Black marker

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1

Thin out your paint by adding it to a cup of water. Repeat this step for all the colors you have chosen!

STEP 2

Now with your thinned paint, take a pipette and drop the colors around your plate in no particular shape or order.

STEP 3

With a straw, blow the paint drops around the plate to give a tie dye look.

After your paint has dried, cut out a starfish star shape!

STEP 5

To finish off your starfish art, add fun details and designs with a black marker. We added a flower shape in the middle and dots going down the arms of our starfish!
