Celebrate Indigenous Heritage Month with Fry Bread!

November is Indigenous Heritage Month, a time to celebrate and learn about the cultures, traditions, and histories of Indigenous peoples. One special food with a rich history is fry bread—a soft, golden bread that’s been shared in many Indigenous communities for generations. Making fry bread together is a fun way to explore history and culture through cooking!

INGREDIENTS

  • About 1 cup oil for frying

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 ½ tablespoons baking powder

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 ¼ cups warm milk

  • Optional: honey

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1

In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and salt.

Slowly add the milk, stirring until a soft dough forms.

Knead the dough gently until smooth, then divide it into 9 small balls.

Flatten each ball into a circle about ¼ inch thick and add a small hole to the middle of each circle.

Carefully heat oil in a frying pan (ask an adult for help!) and fry each piece for about 1–2 minutes per side until golden brown.

Place on a paper towel to cool and add any of your favorite toppings! Fry bread can be enjoyed sweet or savory.
