Puffy Paint Moon

STREAM Activity: Puffy Paint Moon Art

Blast Off to the Moon!

Activity best for children ages four and up

On July 20, 1969 something amazing happened, astronauts flew in a rocket all the way to the moon! It was the very first time people ever walked on the moon, and it showed the whole world just how far curiosity, courage, and science could take us.

To celebrate this historic day, we’re making our own puffy paint moons! Just like the real Moon, your artwork will have bumps and craters, kind of like the footprints the astronauts left behind. While we’re not climbing into the spaceship ourselves, this craft helps us imagine what it might have been like to explore the Moon up close!

VOCABULARY

  • Astronaut: A person who travels to space to learn and explore!

  • Rocket: A super powerful machine that flies astronauts and equipment into space.

GUIDING QUESTIONS

  • What do you think it felt like to be the first astronaut on the Moon?

  • Why do you think rockets need to be so strong to get into space?

MATERIALS

  • Shaving cream

  • Elmer’s glue

  • Plastic cup and spoon

  • Black construction paper

  • White crayon

  • Silver glitter

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1

To create our puffy paint we need shaving cream and Elmer’s glue or any white non-toxic liquid glue. Pour some white glue into your cup and add double the amount of shaving cream to that. Measurements do not need to be accurate!

Mix shaving cream and liquid glue together

STEP 2

Put the mixture aside and grab your black construction paper and white crayon. Time to make a starry sky for our moon! Decorate your paper with stars using the white crayon.

Draw stars on the black construction paper

STEP 3

We can’t have a starry sky without the moon! Using your spoon, pick up your puffy paint, and lather it onto the paper. Try your best to make a full moon shape.

Add puffy paint to the black construction paper

STEP 4

Just like the moon has craters and texture, you can use your fingers or your crayon to create some holes. Lastly, let’s make the moon truly glow with some awesome glitter on top!
