STREAM Activity: Pom Pom Ice Cream

National Ice Cream Day is the perfect time to celebrate one of the world’s favorite treats! Did you know people have been enjoying versions of ice cream for hundreds of years? Long ago, royalty in China and ancient Rome cooled down with flavored snow and ice. Later, inventors added milk, cream, and sugar to make the sweet, cool dessert we know and love today!

To celebrate, we’re getting crafty with yarn to make our very own ice cream cones! We can scoop and swirl our colorful yarn to build a cone that looks almost good enough to eat. Yum!

  • Dessert: A sweet treat often eaten after a meal, like cakes, cookies, or ice cream!

GUIDING QUESTIONS

  • If you could make any flavor of ice cream, what would it be and why?

  • What shapes and colors do you see in your yarn ice cream cone?

MATERIALS

  • Light and dark brown construction paper

  • Scissors

  • Tape or glue

  • Yarn

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1

Create your ice cream cone with light brown construction paper. Make sure you cut out a curve at the top half, it does not need to be perfect!

Wrap the construction paper together to form the cone shape and tape the end.

STEP 3

Set that aside and time to create your own pom poms. You’ll need to wrap the yarn around your fingers and wrap it a couple times. The more yarn you wrap, the bigger your ice cream scoop/pompom will be.

STEP 4

Make sure to leave some string at the end and then use your scissors to cut it. Use that string to tie a knot in the middle of your pom pom and pull.

STEP 5

Use the scissors to cut the ends of your pom poms to create a pom pom effect.

STEP 6

Decorate your cone with dark brown square cut outs.

Add your fuzzy pom poms inside your cone and your sweet treat is ready!
