Let’s Chill Out With Our Arctic Pals!

Activity best for children ages three and up

Brrr! The Arctic is one of the coldest places on Earth, but it’s home to some amazing animals. From fluffy polar bears to playful penguins, Arctic animals have special features that help them survive their icy habitat. Those features are called adaptations! With this paper chain craft, kids can create their own Arctic animals and practice building patterns one link at a time!

VOCABULARY

  • Arctic: A very cold region near the North Pole where snow and ice cover the land most of the year.

  • Habitat: The natural home where an animal lives and finds food, water, and shelter.

GUIDING QUESTIONS

  • How do you think Arctic animals stay warm in such a cold habitat?

  • What is your favorite Arctic animal?

MATERIALS

  • Cardstock (white, black, orange)

  • Scissors

  • Stapler

  • Googly eyes

  • Glue

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1

Cut seven strips of black construction paper for the paper chain.

Staple them together to create your chain pattern.

STEP 3

Use the remaining black construction paper and white construction paper to draw and decorate the head of your penguin. You can add googly eyes here to bring your penguin to life! Then glue it to the top of your chain.

Use the orange construction paper to create a beak and feet for your penguin. Then glue it to the bottom of the chain.
